Tradition Lost and Money Not Found
(Race News for Fans With Short Attention Spans)
By Dennis Michelsen
Brian France was so sure that Southern California would fall in love with NASCAR. They love cars so why not get all revved up over the best racing around? Ending the tradition of the Southern 500 was a disgrace! Consider it a slap in the face to all the loyal fans that helped build this sport from just a Southeastern USA oddity into the International success story it has become. All that was needed to juice up ticket sales at Darlington was to transform the Southern 500 tradition into a night race! Turning Bristol into a night race turned it into the must have ticket! Now NASCAR is stuck with a second race in California that isn't a big seller. California Speedway only has 92,000 seats and they can't sell them out! I wonder how many Labor Day traditions were broken up to move this race out west? How many Dads took their sons to the race because their Dads did the same when they were a kid? Now Darlington has lights and they sold out their Mother's Day weekend race this year! That's a tougher sell than Labor Day so why not move the Southern 500 back? Pride! That's the only reason not to give us back our Southern 500 tradition. Brian France would never admit that he made a mistake and turn back the clock and undo his stupidity! So instead we have a tradition lost without money being found.
