Differential Settings
Sunday, March 15th, 2009

This will cover the differential in a rear wheel drive car, such as formula 1. rFactor has 4 settings to play with: pump, power, coast, and preload. I’ll start off with how they work.

Pump

This adjusts how much locking torque per wheelspeed difference. As one wheel spins more than the other, the pump setting applies a torque difference to counteract the wheelspeed. So if the inside wheel is spinning faster as you exit a corner, the pump applies more driving torque to the outside wheel, and less to the inside, thus preventing the inside wheel from spinning. The greater the wheelspeed difference, the stronger the pump fights back. You can look at the unit values in the hdv file under the [Driveline] section. Below is taken from F1Elites 2009 0.9.

DiffPumpTorque=250.0 // At 100% pump diff setting, the torque redirected per wheelspeed difference in radians/sec (roughly 1.2kph)

This shows that at 100% pump setting, there is 250Nm of torque difference applied for every 1 rad/sec (1.2kph) of wheelspeed difference. This value is different for many mods, so it doesn’t hurt to check this setting when getting used to a new mod.

Power

The hdv file comments “Fraction of power-side input torque transferred through diff”. I’m not certain about the details, but it is clear than this locks the differential as power is transmitted to the wheels. It could be the percentage more engine torque transferred to one wheel compared to the other – meaning that if set to 5%, then one wheel can receive 5% more engine torque than the other. If that is the case, it acts like a variable preload setting (see below), becoming stronger when more power is applied.
Coast

This is just as poorly commented as the power setting. It is known that it works the same way as the power setting, but during engine braking. That means it works when the engine is helping to slow the car. If you are braking and using the throttle to balance the car, then the coast setting is NOT in effect, but rather the power setting.

Preload

The preload setting defines the minimum torque difference between the two sides differential that must be overcome to allow a difference in wheelspeed. Basically you have a locked differential until a large enough disturbance occurs. Below is the preload line from F1E2009 0.9

DiffPreloadRange=(40.0, 10.0, 21) // Preload torque that must be overcome to have wheelspeed difference

Just like the pump setting, preload settings are not the same between different mods. A preload setting of 1 in F1E2009 is different than a preload of 1 in the Meganes. Here we see that the minumum preload is 40Nm (and max of 240), which is down from 80 of last year.

Handling Effects

Like most settings, guides can only do so much to help. I can provide the physics behind settings, but you really need to try them for yourself to know what they do on the track. However, here are some basic tips:
» an open diff (low settings) can help with exit oversteer, but can make the car unpredictable if a slide begins
» extreme low settings can cause the inside wheel to start smoking, which means loss of acceleration
» an open diff can help the car turn in freely, but can become unstable
» a closed diff can make the car feel stiff or sticky, like it doesn’t want to slide smoothly
» preload can help quicken transitions between off and on throttle, as well as between left-right turns, making it easier to work the friction circle
» one can think of coast as entry, pump as apex/general, and power as an exit setting
» don’t be afraid of ‘wacky’ settings – use whatever works
» drivers that slide around will probably like lower settings, while drivers that like to be on rails might like higher settings

4WD differentials in rFactor are a whole different game, and may be explained in another post.

I hope you enjoyed the first article. Next will be the daunting task of dampers.

Переведу седня-завтра.

А в моем - я про прелоад не так перевел - там разница моментов не между колесами, а между Пауэром и Коастом естественно! Было поздно, сам не думал, а прочитал по диагонали )
