Several established NASCAR stars in the star-studded lineup ran into early problems.
Four-time champion Jeff Gordon, driving a Pontiac Riley with former Daytona winners Max Angelelli and Wayne Taylor and Jan Magnusson had to overcome a broken axle early in the race and was running ninth, while reigning Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, sharing another Pontiac Riley with Marc Goossens, Jim Matthews and Ryan Hunter-Reay, had a slight collision with another car that tore off a bracket for the exhaust pipes and cost the team a long pit stop that left them 34th, 22 laps down.
Two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, who has come close to winning this race twice only to run into late mechanical problems, was 42nd, 29 laps behind, after a series of electrical problems.
