По поводу гонки 1907 года и миллиона/ов зрителей:
Quote:In 1904, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. grandson of railroad magnate, Cornelius Vanderbilt, introduced international auto racing to America by staging his first of many Vanderbilt Cup races here on Long Island. The multi-lap race traversed over 284 miles north shore country road. One section of the October 6, 1906 race took the mostly European drivers pell-mell through the then pastoral main intersection of our hamlet. Traveling west on North Hempstead Turnpike (Northern Boulevard) the course forced the drivers to take a harrowing ninety-degree left turn on the Glen Cove Road and head south to Old Westbury. A few chickens may have been scared to death, but no injuries were recorded here. Unfortunately, one bystander (250,000 people viewed the race along the circuit) was killed along another section of the course when he walked out into the roadway. These dangers forced the cancellation of the 1907 race, but in 1908 it was staged again on Vanderbilt’s newly constructed Motor Parkway, a 48-mile paved road. The last race was held in 1910 and the Motor Parkway toll road was closed down in 1937 due to the construction of more modern highways.
