Despite still being only 27, the Frenchman admitted to French newspaper l'Equipe that his chance of landing a leading seat had faded and that he would concentrate his energies on remaining at the top in Champ Car, as well as chasing victory at Le Mans.
Bourdais has been tipped as a possible member of the new Peugeot sportscar team, and has enjoyed a strong relationship with Henri Pescarolo's eponymous squad in the past, and admits that he is keen to return to his home town with a chance of winning the famous 24 Hours.
"I've always said that I would do Le Mans every year I could, as it's a race I really want to win," he told the newspaper, "I hope the discussions with Peugeot come to something but, as of today, nothing is decided."
"I think it's over," Bourdais admitted, "It's frustrating, but there are loads of talented drivers who never went to F1. You can always say it's unfair, but that's F1."
